Kinja'd!!!

I’ll go ahead and apologize in advance for any sarcasm that doesn’t translate as it should due to my current disposition. I’m going to try and get my attitude right by feeding a kitten to an ATM and maybe chopping up some asshole that always gets my name wrong. Maybe celebrate with a cigar.

Cheers.

Has any one particular thing led to this current emotional state?

Be sure to light your cigar with a kitten which is on fire, if you have any extra.

and maybe chopping up some asshole that always gets my name wrong

Anyone I meet for the first time gets my name wrong. They continue to get my name wrong for the first few meetings. Starbucks always gets my name wrong. My name is not strange or unique. It was once very common. Anyone that gets it wrong is off by 1 letter (it’s a three letter name, and all three have a fair spread on being the wrong one).

I do not have a sock in my mouth, I speak clearly. People just don’t give a shit anymore. Chop away.

There’s nothing wrong with this post, or the image, but for the future, maybe don’t use this image the day after a terrorist runs over a bunch of college students?

I sometimes have this problem as well. When I have nothing to do and nowhere in particular to be, I’m the slowest and laziest mofo on the planet. When I do have something to do or somewhere I need to be, the switch flips and I’m a full-on Type-A personality. When that happens, depending on the situation, I can get easily frustrated by little shit that in other circumstances wouldn’t even register on my radar. When I get frustrated by little shit, it piles up over and over again, and it gets very easy to be an asshole to someone else for even the slightest of perceived grievances. When you’re an asshole, sometimes people respond in kind, and that just perpetuates the whole cycle even more.

My dad was the same way, but he had an interesting way of lokking at it and realizing when he was either A) the problem in the entirety or B) part of the problem.

He had what he liked to call the Rule of Three, and the example he used to illustrate it was driving:

Keep track of the number of assholes that you come across. If you run into an asshole on your drive, you ran into an asshole. C’est la vie. If you run into two assholes, you’re having a slightly sub-par day. Whatever; move on and look forward to tomorrow. If you run into three or more assholes, odds are that in reality, three or more people ran into an asshole - and that asshole is you.

When you hit that third asshole, it’s time to examine your own perspectives and your own reactions, and shift a little bit to try to undrestand what role you are playing in all of this and what you can do to make it all easier not only on others, but ultimately yourself. As I said above, people tend to respond to assholes in kind, and that only makes things that much worse.

Someone gets your name wrong? Okay, what’s the context? Is it the barista at Starbucks whose mistake has no impact on your order, or is the bank whose mistake is preventing you from getting the money you need to pay your rent? If you’re snappy with someone, is it because they’re intentionally being an asshole, or because they made a mistake and you’re just in a bad mood to begin with?

If it’s the latter of the above questions, don’t get too upset with yourself or with anyone else. Everyone made mistakes all around, no worries.

If you’re still frustrated, then think of a time that you were happy, and remember the positive things that you saw in yourself, others, and the world around you. Think about how you felt, then try to see that insert those positive things into each situation. The person that got your name wrong? Maybe they have dyslexia, but they’re always there everyday and happy to be trying. The guy that takes a little time at the ATM? Maybe he ought to be examining their records at a different time, but the fact that he is taking the time to care and examine is admirable and praiseworthy. The woman that cut you off in traffic? Maybe she should have double-checked her mirrors, but it could be she was trying to avoid another danger, and took the best option she perceived available to her in her situation. We’ve all done that.

Try to find a positive, and then focus on it. It’ll all be good in the end.

I say I feel stabby today, and you pull this?

I mean, I laughed, but you probably should be watching over your shoulder for the remainder of the day regardless

Thanks for the advice. There’s a few small things, a few larger things, and one big thing that’s got me today. Trying to get over it.

Multiple things all adding up, unfortunately. I can tackle individual issues no problem, but when they come at me from all sides... Harder to get done.
